Join us to photograph the magic of ice covered lighthouses on Lake Michigan.
Our plan is below, but we will adjust based on weather and ice conditions. The possible alternative will be to start in Muskegon and work south . Given the screwy weather we have been having already, this event might be canceled all together. I watch the weather and different webcams in the area.
Our day will start in St Joseph Mi . We will spend the morning on both sides of the St. Joseph River where it meets Lake Michigan. You will be able to photograph the ice covered structures and beach area up close and far away. After a lunch in St.Joseph , head up the road to South Haven (30 minute drive) and walk all the way out the break-wall to the lighthouse for up close shots of the ice as it hangs to the building.
From there its an hour to Grand Haven and what I think is the best of the 3 lighthouses. Again we will go out the break-wall right up to the lighthouse. There are photo opportunities all along of ice and structures. The plan is to stay in the Grand Haven area until the sun begins to set, if the skies are clear.
From there it's time to head east with cards full of great images.
You should consider bringing the following with your camera.
Tripod, wide angle and telephoto lens, Remote or cable release, Polarizing filter, Neutral density filters.
You will want to dress for the outdoors in the winter. Warm layers and sturdy boots with a good grip. Ice grippers for the bottom of boots are nice and are availble at most sportin
St Joseph is about 3 hours from Detroit via I-94. For those looking to carpool. we will put people in contact with each others.
The fine print for this event:
1. Walking out to the lighthouses is along packed snow and ice covered break-wall walkways. It is un-even and has no railings. With the use of common sense it is easy to walk out and back. You are always welcome to go as far as you feel comfortable. But the effort is worth it.
2. Weather leading up to this can have a great effect on the area and ice coverings. We will be monitoring the weather in the area, if we experience a warm up leading up to our day, we will cancel the trip. I can not guarantee what we will find on arrival.
3. All participants will be asked to sign a liability release before we get started.
Any cancellation policies for Meetups will be posted on the Meetup website when the Meetup is scheduled.
